Starting a business and making it successful takes a lot of work and there are a lot of problems to avoid. There will be people along the way that will either help you on your journey or cause you problems and waste a lot of your time and maybe money. For some, spotting problem people is a natural talent, but for many it only comes from hard experience. To help you get ahead of the game, here are some hints on what type of people to avoid.
Watch out for people who start talking about money before you even know them that well. People that talk about how much they make or how much this or that cost are usually not the kind of people you can trust or do business with. Maybe what they’re talking about is true but there is a time and a place to announce that and it’s usually not when you first meet them. Chances are they’re either on an ego trip, or just need attention. Either way, best to stay away.
Along the same theme as talking about money are people who brag about themselves all the time. These are the ones who are constantly bragging about their accomplishments and conquests. Name dropping is another dead give away. When they continuously talk about famous people they know, the huge companies they’ve worked for or the lofty positions they’ve held. These people are probably suffering from low self-esteem. These aren’t people you want to involve in your business.
There are a lot of big talkers out there. People who say they want to conquer the world are common, but seldom do they follow through on anything. Before you enter into business with someone who has plans that seem way to big for the short term, make sure they have a track record of doing what they say.
A little common sense goes a long way in the business world.
