The Millennial generation brought some interesting changes to many different industries. The workplace and its dynamics have been forever changed thanks to the innovative vision of generation Y. However, now that we are seeing generation Z joining the workforce, we need to prepare for a new generation of talent and the changes they will bring upon many different fields.
The fact that Generation Z joining the workforce is now a reality, we should consider how they will shift the way several industries work. Also, we must think of the differences between them and millennials, as they indeed differ from one another. Then, we’ll be able to start thinking about what the future of the workplace looks like with this new generation of talents entering the industry.
Generation Z is quite a young one, as they were born between the mid-1990s and mid-2000s. This means that they are just graduating from college and slowly entering the work field. Even when there is not enough research available about how Gen Z actually behaves in terms of work ethics, performance, and commitment, there is still much information about them available.
We should keep in mind that Generation Z is the very first fully digital generation. This means that they are tech-savvy, and they expect tech-based communication channels. This also means that they expect flexibility, as, with technology, work can happen anytime, anywhere. Also, they are quite independent and enjoy finding their own ways to “do things”. Thus, it is quite likely that they will reject standard forms of hierarchy within the workplace.
There are many differences between Millennials and Generation Z. Even when they are quite close in age, both have had many different events shaping their personalities. This will apply to how they behave in the workplace and outside of it, too. To begin with, Millennials have a very collective mindset when it comes to success and achieving goals. However, for Gen Z, success depends on competition and hard work.
Also, each generation has seen different economic times and events. Many millennials were to see the economic prosperity and stability of their parents. Even when they are suffering from fewer opportunities and more economic challenges, there is still a bit of belief in them. This is not the same for Gen Z, as they witnessed the recession and struggles of their parents. This created in them a sort of survivor mentality and ideology.
Having analyzed some of the characteristics and differences between Millennials and Gen Z, we can now talk about the future of the field. Generation Z joining the workforce will most likely change the game for most of us. Because Gen Z is a connected generation, they are well aware of the world they live in. They understand the issues around them and want to make a difference. Yet, they also understand the impact they can have.
This will lead the new generation of talent to work hard and achieve a greater good. However, they are likely to want to work independently and on their own. After all, they know their voice is individual and unique and will want to show that in the workplace. We should understand that, regardless of being a young generation, they are well-informed and motivated to achieve great things. Our small and medium businesses and companies shouldn’t try to limit their potential and should let Gen Z be themselves instead.
